Our Earth is no longer a safe place to live.
It seems so since the spread of coronavirus, which has claimed up to 781,677 lives globally, and has affected up to 22,213,869 people according to the World Health Organisation‘s records.
Myths and Rumors
In the initial phase of the COVID-19 outbreak, there were rumors all around the world that masks and coveralls prove to be an ineffective shield against the coronavirus. After much researches and experiments by scientists, it was ultimately confirmed that all those rumors were ill-founded. There is no better precaution against coronavirus than a mask that covers your mouth and nose- that is, until a vaccine is introduced, in the world market.
Masks not only protect you from inhaling the antigens from the environment but, they also act as a constant reminder to be on alert against any physical contact outside of your safe and disinfected haven. Due to the mask, you are also safeguarded from touching your nose and mouth repeatedly, because doing so can help the fatal virus enter through your oral and nasal airways.
Which masks are most effective?
Florida Atlantic University carried out a research study to gauge the effectiveness of various mass-produced masks in the market. They placed various types and shapes of masks on mannequins’ mouths and detected the cough and sneeze droplets passing through the masks using the laser technology. The results were later published in the “Physics of Fluids.” The cone-shaped and double or triple-layered fit-to-mouth masks were more impermeable when it came to passing cough droplets from the exterior to the interior and vice versa.
Are masks a tad too heavy on your wallet?
Surgical masks, and the most-hyped N95, offer the highest protection but, can burn a big hole in your earnings. The surgical respirator with multiple layers needs to be replaced every 4-6 hours and can be very expensive for individuals, especially since many are suffering financially due to the lockdown.
According to WHO and CDC’s research, a multi-layered face mask is equally reliable in filtering the air particles. These are a pocket-friendly alternative as long as you take care of your mask’s hygiene by washing it regularly. Cotton fabric is prioritized because it allows you to breathe easily, while the multilayer folds can effectively safeguard you against the pathogens.
Measures we need to take to safeguard against corona;
While it is scientifically proven that covering the face with a mask is an effective measure to prevent the germs from entering the human body.
Other measures, however, are equally essential and should be followed vigilantly.
- Disinfect surfaces that are frequently in contact.
- Maintain a six feet distance from others while in public or workplaces.
- Wash your hands and face often. Sanitize in case of unavailability of water and a good antibacterial soap.
- Avoid stepping out in public if suffering from cold or flu.
Lastly, at all times, have a face mask when you step out of your house even if you plan to travel solo. You can never be sure about which surface is contaminated by germs and can put you at risk of carrying the illness.
