The younger generation might not remember this, but back in the day, Elvis Presley’s gyrating hips and seductive dance moves were considered too inappropriate for uptight puritans who thought that such ‘unacceptable’ behavior could bring God’s wrath on people.
If you come to think of it now, it seems ridiculous that dancing was once considered taboo, but human standards are forever changing and some of the biggest taboos from the past have melted away like the snow as forward-thinkers pave way for a brave new world where there’s little room for unnecessary judgment and hypocrisy.
Here are some of the most common thing we do today that once used to be completely unacceptable. Let’s see how many of them surprise you.
Wearing Baseball Caps was Considered a Serious Fashion Blunder
Baseball caps are everywhere today and are considered a staple in any dad’s wardrobe. But this fashion accessory was once considered a serious faux pas in American culture because of its importance in the quintessential American sport: baseball. Even today, baseball caps are considered the most iconic sportswear of all times, but to ban people from wearing them on the streets is a little far-fetched.
The fashion mandates were quite different back in the day, and any man who wore a baseball cap as a headpiece was skull-shamed and labeled as indecent. Of course, there was a no law that stopped men from donning the caps but people generally avoided talking to men who were guilty of committing this fashion blunder.
Chicken Wings Were Considered Inedible
Can you even imagine a game night without a bowl of delicious buffalo wings? But this savory snack used to be marginalized back in the day for being one of the least desirable cuts on the bird, used only to give flavor to stocks and broths. It wasn’t until 1964 when a bar owner from Buffalo, New York, put her own spin on the chicken wings, turning them into delicious finger food popularly consumed around the world today.
The story began when the owners of the Anchor Bar, Teressa and Frank Bellissimo bought chicken necks to make their signature Bolognese sauce but ended up getting wings by mistake. With such a large batch of chicken wings on their hands, the chefs had to come up with a creative way to serve them to the customers. That’s when Teressa came up with the idea to whip up some delicious buffalo wings which were an instant hit at the bar. Too bad the dish was named after Buffalo and not Teressa.
Jogging Was Considered an Abnormal Practice
The uptight Christian communities of the early 1900s had reservations about pretty much every activity – including jogging. Back in the day, running in public was considered as inappropriate as cartwheeling without any clothes on.
It was the Nike co-founder who introduced the fitness trend to the clueless American communities, although his efforts were met with suspicion in the beginning and some even called him a madman for popularizing such a ridiculous activity.
Pinball was Illegal for Decades
Okay, pinball machines aren’t as popular as they used to be a decade ago, but back in the early 1900s, they were repudiated for a very bizarre reason. The game was considered a pastime for criminals and gamblers hence any man in possession of the machine could be arrested and thrown in prison. In 1942, the mayor of New York City, Fiorello LaGuardia, initiated a campaign to find every pinball machine in the city and destroy it in order to save the children.
Smiling in Photos was Highly Discouraged
Saying ‘Cheeeeze’ in photographs might be acceptable nowadays but back in the day people didn’t like showing emotions for the camera. Why? Because they wanted to be remembered as highly intellectual, stern-looking individuals, not hopeless fools who smiled for no reason in photographs. It wasn’t until the 1920s when people started becoming more open to the idea of goofing around for the camera.
