When This Cheetah Met A Puppy, Something Unexpected Happened And It Will Leave You Speechless
Anyone who believes that animals are devoid of human-like sentiments might have to rethink it after reading through this heart-warming tale of an extraordinary phenomenon. It all started after May 12, 2015, when Kumbali, a cheetah cub, was born at the Metro Richmond Zoo along with many more of his siblings.
When the innocent one’s life was gradually becoming a living hell, the zookeepers agreed on shifting him to a separate enclosure, not alone, though. Kumbali had the company of a puppy! Did the two fulfill each other’s voidness or end up being rivals? Let’s find out!
Battling for Survival
Darwin’s theory of “survival of the fittest” couldn’t be more accurate in the case of the zoo’s cheetah cubs. Kumbali, born fragile, faced the struggle for survival in a pack where he stood the weakest. So, he could barely fend for himself when his siblings took advantage of the little one’s frailty.
Lacking physical strength is a significant drawback in the animal world, and none understood it better than those who speculated Kumbali’s distress. The poor cub barely had the stamina to fight for food, plus, due to starvation, he kept losing more weight. Couldn’t someone save this cheetah kid from meeting its doom?
Away from Mommy
Heartrending as it may sound, animal mothers tend to abandon some of their children after birth, especially those born with deformities. Kumbali’s mum stood no exception! To save the innocent cub from the harsh realities of nature, the zookeepers decided to take him away from the mother.

After they started bottle-feeding Kumbali, he slowly began to regain his strength, and in a few days, he even tried eating on his own. So, the keepers took the kid back to its pack, guessing he’ll be able to fight his own battle this time. Yet, little did they know what destiny had in store for Kumbali!
The Homecoming
When Kumbali was reintroduced to his clan, he was expected to pick up where he left off. Yet, the caretakers could hardly guess that the equation between wildcats is no similar to humans! The animal world functions differently – they exist in the “now,” so naturally, an event from a week or more ago is easily forgotten.

As fate would have it, Kumbali received no warm welcome from his mother or siblings. Despite the efforts of the keepers to help him survive, the poor cub was deprived of the happy life he deserved. It looked like he was destined to live without a family.
The Abandoned Kid
Although Kumbali repossessed his physical strength, he couldn’t make a place in his own family. The short time the cub had been away from its pack was enough to wipe off all emotional ties. Now, they seemed not to have anything to do with him!

Social deprivation can be equally stressful for animals, as it is for humans. Its consequences had an awful impact even on this abandoned cheetah cub, who was often found depressed and lost in thought by its keepers. They often wondered if there was even a gleam of hope at the end of Kumbali’s path of isolation.
To End the Misery
When it stood out clearest to the zoo officials that the pack of cheetahs had no room for Kumbali, they decided to protect him once more. This time, from his silent suffering of loneliness.

The caretakers could no longer see the unfortunate cub blankly staring at the sky or lying down lonely. So, they were determined to find him a suitable playmate who can fill the vacuum of his life created due to his family’s abandonment. Yet, what if the animal instinct in Kumbali compels him to perceive his new pal as prey?
An Absurd Experiment
None can deny that cheetahs are one of the fastest animals on the planet. Their speed and tactics also make them extraordinary and efficient predators. So, the zookeepers were expected to give ample thought before selecting Kumbali as a proper companion for any animal.

Yet, hardly anyone guessed that they would choose a puppy among all beasts to accompany the cheetah cub! From the little we know of the animal kingdom – felines and canines have always been arch enemies. So now the question is – did the Metro Richmond Zoo successfully break such myths with their absurd experiment?
Suitable for A Meal Or Coexistence?
Perhaps, the behavioral patterns of wild animals cannot be deduced by some preconceived notions. At least, whoever stood spectators to Kumbali and his new roommate certainly claimed so after a few weeks!

Who knows what idea the zoo officials had while executing this uncanny approach for the cub’s survival? Although a cheetah can make prey out of a dog, one must also keep in mind that they were both introduced to one another at a very tender age. So maybe, things could go out of the ordinary, and the two might learn to coexist peacefully!
The Other Motives
Loneliness wasn’t the sole concern of the caretakers while devising this odd experiment for our Kumbali. Cheetahs are known to suffer from anxiety spasms, especially for being held captive in zoo cages for months or even years.

To avoid such psychological upheavals in Kumbali’s case and ensure that he doesn’t become restless or hurt himself in the process, they brought a canine companion into the picture. Curiosity knew no bounds for the zoo officials as they waited to see if the two would bond well and provide each other the emotional support they deserve.
Why A Dog?!
It isn’t for no reason that dogs are known as man’s best friend. Their pleasant and cheerful disposition helps them connect to almost anyone with ease. Also, do we even need to say how every fascinating trait of a canine is at its best when it is still a puppy?

So despite their opposing persona, the vet considered it best to keep them together. If the keepers threw the dog into a cage of an adult cheetah, the outcome would’ve been the most apparent thought that comes to our mind. Yet, Kumbali’s case was entirely different – they were still too young to develop an aggressive front!
Cubs are Great Playmates
The task of finding Kumbali a companion was seemingly arduous. One had to keep in mind his age, size, and temperament to avoid any mishaps. So, perhaps the keepers’ determination and fondness for the abandoned kid paid off when they decided on leaving him with a pup.

They hypothesized that the two cubs would gradually begin playing together. Getting into fun games might act as the perfect bonding element. Also, it might help Kumbali to shove his wild nature aside and learn to trust others. Of course, only time would tell if it all went as per the caretakers’ conjectures.
An Introduction to Kago
As Kumbali’s new buddy, the zoo officials brought an adorable rescue puppy named Kago, adopted from a nearby animal shelter. As fate would have it, the puppy was as fortunate with his early life as Kumbali.

Just like the cheetah cub, Kago too had to withstand several hardships despite his tender age. It’s incredibly alarming to believe that the little mutt was a victim of animal cruelty! He was kept in dire situations for days by some evil beings, who left him to suffer. So maybe Kago’s guardian angel had plans to balance those miseries with lots of positive changes in his later childhood!
The Rescue Mission
Luckily, it wasn’t long before the animal rights activists barged into the shelter to discover the pup’s deplorable condition. They rescued Kago and other creatures who were trapped inside and tormented.

When the team started searching for new owners and shelters to keep the poor animals safely, the zookeepers got in touch with them. Kumbali’s keepers were finally excited at having an absolute bundle of joy for their uncertain mission, which might take the world by surprise (or might not). Everyone just kept hoping that things would go according to the plan, so let’s see what transpired.
Some Forethoughts
No wonder Kago was a favorable companion for Kumbali as per the caretakers’ speculations, but the reality might not coincide. What if the cheetah cub and pup fail to get along with each other?

The two kids were soon to meet, and from our idea about new neighbors, it is not improbable for them to get in a physical fight. It would be saddening for the keepers if either one of the cubs get injured or suffer in the process. Yet, at the same time, they couldn’t let the little ones remain gloomy in their own desolate spaces too. So clearly, their plan had to work!
Finally, the Meet-up
The long-awaited day eventually arrived when the canine and feline cubs confronted one another for the first time. The two shattered everyone’s expectations by sticking to their corners and staring at the other with timid eyes.

Being absolute strangers, their apprehension and mistrust were understandable. At least, it gave a sense of relief to those who surmised that the two would instantly come to blows. Well, after some time, the two started making minor moves as if to try and get comfortable in each other’s presence. If all it takes is time for something splendid to happen, the keepers were ready to give them loads.
Kago being “Nosey”
The tension between the little beasts was easing out with time. Unlike humans, it is not easy for animals to express their liking for something. Even so, dogs can show their fondness through their body language, and that’s precisely what Kago did!

After advancing towards Kumbali, the pup started sniffing him. With bated breath, everyone waited for the cub’s reaction, but he seemed indifferent. Kago then began pouncing on the cub and then biting its tail with hardly any response from Kumbali. Perhaps, such attention from a stranger was so shocking to the young wildcat that he could barely figure out how to react.
Anything’s Possible for a Dog
Kumbali’s coldness was gradually turning into bewilderment and perhaps eagerness as well at the puppy’s activities. Yet, on the other hand, Kago showed clear signs of fondness for his new pal. Had the employees just done the impossible – befriended a wild cat and a dog?!

If the case is so, we have to admit that dogs stand as the most gracious and amiable creatures. Their endearing disposition can help melt the heart of even a fierce animal like a cheetah – this case is its best example. The keepers only hoped that things remain looking up, and the cubs start to feel some rapport.
The Budding Friendship
Looking at Kumbali and Kago’s friendship, none would’ve said that the two had met only a few days ago. In hardly any time, the new pals refused to leave each other’s side, so much so that the zookeepers were bound to keep them in the same enclosure.

Spending every minute together perhaps did wonders in making their relationship genuine and powerful. The vacuum in Kumbali’s life, created on being denied by his pack was slowly filling up in Kago’s companionship. After all, the pup was the only family he ever knew!
Selflessness on Another Level
Adventures never seemed to end for the two surrogate siblings. They invented new games to keep themselves busy and joyous all the time, which was a pleasing sight for anyone who came across their chamber.

Kago was overprotective of his friend and was always there to defend him from any possible hazard. While, on the other hand, Kumbali surprised everyone with his eating ritual. When food was served to them, the cheetah cub always used to let his playmate eat first. Imagining such gestures from a wildcat is no less than a dream, yet here it was a reality!
Without a Care in the World
Lost in their blissful world, Kumbali and Kago hardly cared about their surroundings or the onlookers who watched them through the fence. Instead, they soaked themselves in the sun and played all day in the fresh air, staying ignorant to the crowd that cheered at them lovingly.

When it was time to sleep, the cub and the pup cuddled up like fur balls and slept comfortably. There was barely any moment when the two left each other alone. Clearly, their friendship became one that could make anyone jealous. Who knew that what started as an unusual experiment, within a short span, would evolve to something better than anyone’s expectations?
Birthday Gifts
If humans can have grand celebrations on their birthdays, why can’t the animals? The officials of the Metro Richmond Zoo thought the same and decided to give birthday presents to Kumbali and Kago, that too, on the anniversary day of their first meeting. After all, they were the most cheerful couple in the zoo!

The brothers-from-different-mothers were overjoyed to see their wrapped gifts, which they instantly tore apart like kids. Seeing their eternal contentment, their caretakers decided to make this an annual tradition. So every year, these best friends celebrate their birthdays with gifts, just like us!
Should’ve Been Official Mascots
Kago and Kumbali jointly took on the job of the welcoming committee, bringing in new guys and showing them around. As the friendliest duo, their affection wasn’t limited to themselves or the fellow animals of the zoo but also their caretakers and other people.

These best friends’ enclosure was undeniably the biggest attraction of the zoo. Many wonder why they weren’t announced as the Metro Richmond zoo’s official mascots! People who didn’t believe that chemistry between felines and canines could ever be so harmonious flocked here to witness Kago and Kumbali’s picture-perfect bond.
New Neighbors Arrived
The zoo was expanding and changing, which meant that the pup and the cub always had something interesting going around them. So far, it hardly seemed to affect the two, but now that they would have new neighbors around, perhaps they’ll start caring.

Penguins aren’t the kind of fellows you’d prefer messing with because although they seem all cute and cuddly, they can get fierce at times. So the zoo officials have to take serious measures to keep them private and sheltered from the rest of the zoo if they want to avoid a probable commotion. If only our favorite duo gets along well with their new guests!
With the Polar beings
Imagine the thoughts in the minds of a dog and cheetah on seeing their neighborly folks sitting across. Hounds habitually scare birds away, so it is not unlikely for Kago to think alike. While for a wild predator like Kumbali, penguins should look no better than a plate of seared drumsticks and wings.

Jokes apart, the first time the two besties exchanged glances with the penguins, it was with great suspicion. Well, it may be because they were still strangers who hadn’t yet met officially. So, it is quite understandable if they do not wish to hobnob so soon. Who’s in a hurry, anyway?
Another Odd Experiment
The officials and caretakers of this zoo kept finding ways to spice up their life. In fact, it wouldn’t be hard to believe if it turns out that they’ve been crazy scientists in their past life, given their interests in weird trials.

So ultimately, after much consideration, the keepers were to introduce Kago and Kumbali to their new acquaintances. Until now, they haven’t shown any sign of aggression for others but only stared in awe. Perhaps, both parties were equally inquisitive about the other. Although there’s hardly any reason to stress about the two besties, none can put the finger on the probable aftermath.
Playtime With New Neighbors
When the much-awaited encounter took place, something delightful occurred. The penguins came towards their neighbors and playfully nipped them as if they were trying to communicate. Indeed, this looked no different from the time when Kago first met Kumbali.

After shaking off the initial apprehension, they gladly began to play altogether. What an incredible sight it was! The penguins showed the carnivores some new games, and they seemed to bond well in no time. Clearly, nothing was impossible for Kago and Kumbali. Had we been told that the two discovered a remedy for heartbreaks, we would have blindly accepted it without a speck of doubt!
More Fun Awaiting
The Metro Richmond zoo was becoming a primary entertainment zone for the animals, and the two inseparable friends still reigned to be everyone’s favorite. Even the Penguins couldn’t get enough of them. Well, it was hard to escape from Kumbali and Kago’s magnetic charm!

Finally though, someone arrived who could match their level of energy. It was a little pig who was recently kept at the adjacent enclosure. Not only was it defiant, but it also showed enough guts to frustrate a dog and a wildcat undaunted, like it was its only mission in life!
Escaping Piggy’s Pranks
Who would believe that the spirited little creature wouldn’t leave any chance to upset and bully Kumbali and Kago?! The two really had a tough time escaping his newfound pranks on them. Nevertheless, it was interesting to watch their day-to-day saga.

Yet, after a long span of togetherness, it was finally timed to wave the pig a goodbye, who had to move away for some time. Although the feline and canine of this zoo were too kind-hearted to bawl out on their fellow neighbor, people were still excited to watch their drama unfold in the near future.
Their Aww-adorable Love Story Continues
Years may pass, neighbors may come and go, but Kago and Kumbali have remained each other’s sweetheart. It’s as if they were born to share every single moment. We doubt if they were destined to come as twins on earth. God only knows why He changed his plan later!

Ever since they’ve been exposed to the public, they have kept winning the audience’s hearts with their antics. The duo flock more and more people around their enclosure to bust all myths and witness magic before their eyes. Some of their videos and images went viral on the internet to leave people across the globe in amazement.
There’s a Lot to Learn
Kumbali and Kago’s story is not only fascinating to listen to or read about, but it also teaches us some truths of life. More than anything, it changes our perception of the animal world. Indeed, the wildlife isn’t as wild or ferocious as we consider it to be!

Had the zookeepers not dived into the unusual, two lives perhaps wouldn’t have persisted this long. We’re lucky that they did, and so today, we could narrate this inspiring anecdote. Many have no clue how a little love and support can change someone else’s life; it doesn’t matter if it’s a wildcat, a hound, or any other feral creature!
Friendship Surpasses Blood Relations
Kumbali and Kago’s friendship has stood the test of time, so it is undeniable that companionship is more impressive than we can imagine it to be. The instincts of a full-grown cheetah didn’t overpower even after staying in proximity with its likely prey. The affection for his mate so blinds him!

Indeed friendship surpasses all biological ties, and fraternity is no gift of the bloodline! Although tales of these two have played on our emotions so far, our sole takeaway is the belief that even the impossible can be achieved if we’re loving and loyal towards each other because true friendship has no thresholds.
